What is a digital nomad?

Understand, in a single guide, the official Spanish name for what is commonly called the “digital nomad visa”, the difference between a visa and a residence permit, the basic logic of the application and how family members are covered.

OFFICIAL SPANISH NAME

Teletrabajador de carácter internacional

In English: international teleworker. The official term for the consular route is “Visado de residencia para teletrabajo” (residence visa for teleworking); for the permit route from within Spain it is “Autorización de residencia para teletrabajadores de carácter internacional” (residence permit for international teleworkers).

What does “digital nomad” mean?

It is the everyday term for a third-country (non-EU) national who works remotely for companies outside Spain using computer, telematic and telecommunications systems.

Are the visa and the residence permit the same?

No. The national visa issued by a consulate and the residence permit assessed in Spain by the UGE are separate application routes.

Who is it for?

It is designed for employees who can do their job remotely and for self-employed professionals; each file is assessed on its own evidence.

Which legislation applies?

The core framework is the international mobility provisions of Ley 14/2013 (Law 14/2013 on support for entrepreneurs and their internationalisation).

TWO SEPARATE ROUTES

Distinguish the consular visa from the UGE residence permit.

Which route applies depends on where the person is, their legal status and the circumstances of the file.

1 · National visa from Türkiye

The application for a “residence visa for teleworking” is made through Spain’s competent diplomatic or consular mission. Check the location, appointment process and document list on the mission’s current web page.

2 · Residence permit from within Spain

Eligible people who are lawfully present in Spain may consider the UGE’s international teleworker residence permit route. Submissions and notifications are handled through the electronic system.

Visa validity, permit duration, place of application and document scope are not the same thing. EspNomad gathers this information separately in the pre-assessment to identify the right route.

KEY AREAS OF REVIEW

Eligibility is not determined by a single document.

The official authorities assess the working relationship, the company, professional qualifications, financial means and security documents together.

1

Work that can be done remotely

The duties are expected to be capable of being carried out remotely using information and communication technologies.

2

Working relationship and company

The relationship with the employer or clients abroad and the company’s genuine, ongoing activity must be evidenced.

3

Qualifications

A relevant degree or professional experience documents accepted by the official authority are reviewed.

4

Finances, social security and insurance

The current financial threshold, social security arrangements and health cover are verified for each file.

Summary of the official definition: The UGE defines an international teleworker as a third-country national who carries out their activity for companies outside Spain remotely, exclusively by means of computer, telematic and telecommunications tools. Open the primary UGE source ↗
FAMILY APPLICATIONS

Family members are not a copy of the main file.

For a spouse or partner, eligible children and dependent ascendants (parents) who meet the requirements, evidence of identity, relationship, financial means and other matters is prepared separately.

Spouse or partner

The marriage, or a comparable relationship accepted by the official authority, is documented.

Children

Age, financial dependency and family-unity conditions are reviewed for each file.

Dependent ascendants

The dependency relationship and other relevant conditions are evidenced.

A separate record for each person

Passports, forms, insurance and other documents are tracked for each family member.

INCOME THRESHOLD (2026)

How much income do you need to show?

The threshold is tied to the Spanish minimum wage (SMI). SMI 2026: €1,221 × 14 payments = €17,094 a year. The main applicant needs 200%, the first family member +75% and each further member +25%. The check uses gross amounts.

ApplicationMonthly (gross, over 12 months)Yearly (gross)
Single applicant€2,849€34,188
Applicant + spouse€3,917€47,009
Applicant + spouse + 1 child€4,274€51,282
Applicant + spouse + 2 children€4,630€55,556
  • The gross income counts, not the net figure on your payslip; where 14 salaries are paid, the yearly total matters.
  • Income must be documented regularly with contracts, payslips, invoices and bank statements; savings alone are usually not enough.
  • The SMI can change every year; the amount in force on the application date applies.
TAX

Tax in Spain and the Beckham regime.

The 183-day rule

If you stay in Spain more than 183 days in a calendar year you are usually tax resident in Spain and declare your worldwide income there.

Beckham regime (impatriates)

Employment income up to €600,000 is taxed at a flat 24% and above that at 47%; it can apply in the year you move and the following 5 years.

Beckham conditions

You must not have been tax resident in Spain in the last 5 years and must apply separately to Hacienda (Modelo 149), usually within 6 months of starting your activity in Spain; it is not automatic.

Double taxation

Türkiye and Spain have a double taxation agreement; where tax is paid depends on your personal situation.

Always take tax decisions with a tax adviser; this section is general information.

SOCIAL SECURITY

SGK contributions and the risk of paying twice.

Employee of a Turkish company

Türkiye and Spain have a social security agreement. Whether you can stay insured in Türkiye depends on the certificate issued by SGK; without it, registration (alta) in Spain may be needed.

Freelancer

In Spain you usually register as “autónomo” and pay monthly contributions.

Double contribution risk

With the wrong set-up you may pay in both countries or end up without cover; plan before you apply.

DOCUMENTS

Apostille, sworn translation and validity periods.

Apostille

Official Turkish documents (criminal record, diploma, marriage and birth records) are certified with the Hague apostille.

Sworn translation

Documents not in Spanish are translated by a sworn translator (traductor jurado) authorised by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Validity

Criminal records, bank statements and company letters usually must be under 90 days old; the passport must stay valid. The portal shows the time left for each document.

Criminal record

You must have no criminal record in Spain or in the countries you lived in during the last 5 years; a certificate from each country is required.

TIMELINES

From application to long-term residence.

  3. Residence card (TIE)After the decision or entry, book a police fingerprint appointment, usually within 1 month.
  4. Initial permit and renewalThe initial permit is granted for up to 3 years; while the conditions continue, a 2-year renewal can be requested. Apply before it expires.
  5. Long-term residencePossible after 5 years of continuous legal residence if the other conditions are met; not automatic.
  6. CitizenshipFor Turkish citizens the general rule is 10 years of legal, continuous residence.
